CFL Football Sportsbooks

The Canadian Football League (CFL) is different from the NFL in a few ways. Primarily, it lacks the publicity and popularity of the NFL. Gambling action is encouraged in Canada as the CFL condones wagers on its games. The NFL, on the other hand, realizes it cannot possibly stop gambling on its games but publicly takes a stance against the action. CFL games can be bet on with a variety of wagers through online sportsbooks. Wagers can be made through online sportsbooks normally either online or by telephone. The types of wagers are similar to NFL betting. However, if you’re new to sports betting, you should probably take the time to read over the various betting types.

Type of Bets

In football, despite the league, bettors should become familiar with the point spread. The point spread is sometimes called the spread or the line. The point spread is used to set the margin for the game. The margin makes the wager fair essentially by handicapping the favorite team (taking points). The underdog is in return given points to create a balance.

The point spread assigns one team a minus sign and the other a plus sign. For example, if the Edmonton Eskimos are -14 and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are +14, the Eskimos are the favorite by 14 points. If a bet is placed on the Edmonton Eskimos to win, they must win by more than 14 points. A wager on the Tiger-Cats to win only requires a tie, win or loss by less than 14 points.

Another type of betting is the moneyline. The moneyline is where the bettor picks a team to win without a margin. The point spread is the most popular in football but the concept of the moneyline is used in a few types of bets. If the BC Lions were playing the Calgary Stampeders, an example of a moneyline would be the Lions at -140 and +150 for the Stampeders. A wager on the Lions to win would require $140 to win $100. The wager for the Stampeders to win would only require $100 and the bettor wins $150.

Online sportsbooks that offer football odds normally offer a few other betting types as well. This selection may include over/under bets, parlays, If bets, reverse bets and a few others. The over/under option represents betting on the total score. The two teams’ scores are added to create the total score. Parlays are combination bets where bettors have the option to bet on more than one team within a single wager. The odds improve dramatically but the bettor’s teams must all win for the parlay to win.

If bets are where bettors have the option to bet on one team. If that team wins or pushes, the same wager is placed on another team. For example, an If bet would be a wager of $100 on the BC Lions to beat the Edmonton Eskimos and if they win or push, a $100 wager is placed on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to beat the Montreal Alouettes. A reverse bet is an If bet that works both ways. This is called double action.

Most bettors that do not have a good working knowledge of sports betting and more importantly know very little about the CFL tend to place straight bets on the favorite team. It is good to become familiar with the various betting types and study the sport you are wagering on.

Sportsbook Considerations

There is an abundance of online sportsbooks available to bettors and picking the right one can seem challenging but should take minimal research. The things to look for in an online sportsbook for CFL betting can be obtained by conducting a few basic Internet searches. Mostly, the information needed can be found on the online sportsbooks own websites. Bettors should first be looking to see if the sportsbook even offers CFL odds and accepts wagers. Secondly, you should inquire to find what type of wagers the sportsbook offers.

Things to look for that don’t necessarily relate to CFL betting include banking options, customer support, ease of placing your wagers and sport selection. Bettors should also make sure the sportsbook accepts bettors from their country of residence.
